Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen said the NSW Government was funding the $2.55 million project as part of a $25 million program of work to improve safety and upgrade sections of the New England Highway between Aberdeen and Willow Tree.
“The upgrade involves rebuilding the 2.1 kilometres of the road surface for the 5500 vehicles traveling through our town daily,” he said.
“Work will be carried out on the travel lanes and road shoulders at four sites from 400 metres east of Victoria Street to 200 metres northwest of Glenalvon Road.
“This important work also includes improving line marking, upgrading safety barriers and installing new signs at intersections.”
Work started on Monday and will be carried out Monday to Saturday between 7am and 6pm until late February next year, weather permitting.
However, no work will take place during the holidays from Saturday, December 17, to Sunday, January 8.
For the safety of workers and motorists, a temporary reduced speed limit and traffic control will be in place during work hours.
All lanes will be open outside working hours, however traffic will be guided by portable traffic lights.
Access to properties in the project area will be maintained at all times.
