Singleton resident, and dog owner, Kirrily Donohue said it has already been well utilised by people in the community.
She said there have been groups of people standing and talking while their dogs are running around, which makes it a good social event for everyone.
“It’s good for people and pet exercise,” she said.
“I just think it’s been a really good thing for Singleton people.
“It also gives the opportunity, if it’s well advertised, for people who are travelling with their pets.”
Mrs Donohue anticipates that after daylight saving begins it will increase even more.
She said council provides everything from pooper scooper bags and a bin, to water facilities.
“It’s all fully-contained and it works as a safer option too,” she said.
To celebrate Local Government Week, Singleton Council will host Singleton’s Active Doggie Day, on Saturday, August 8, from 10am to noon.
There will be a range of dog-related services and advice available at the event.
Heights Pet Hospital will provide free micro-chipping, and Singleton Veterinary Hospital will offer free dog dental checks.
Not to mention a lucky dig, giveaways, dog races, and the Hill’s Pet Nutrition dog mascot.
There will also be a best dressed competition, as well as a Good Dog Best Trick section.
Council’s general manager Lindy Hyam said an important local government service was the promotion of responsible pet ownership.
“Owning a pet can give your family years of fun, but it is your responsibility to keep your pets safe, healthy and out of trouble with neighbours and other community members,” she said.
There will also be stalls for RSPCA, Hunter Animal Rescue, Australian Working Dog Rescue, Paskarla Pets and Accessories, Hunter Valley Pet Protectors, Hunter Photo Slates and K9 Klip n Klean.
For those who are interested in owning a dog, Hunter Animal Rescue and Australian Working Dogs will have rescue dogs available for adoption at the park.
There will be free face painting and balloon twisting for children, Singleton Lions Club will be cooking barbecue lunch, and drinks will be available for purchase.
Merricks Fire Brigade off-leash dog park, is located at Darlington Road, Dunolly.
To make the day safe, no cats are allowed on the day, and all dogs must remain on the leash for the duration of the event, except when in the races.
