Minister for Sport and Recreation Stuart Ayres said an $8650 grant had been awarded to help organise the JetBlack 12 Hour Race, the first endurance ride at a new location at Baerami on Saturday.
“Riders enjoy challenges and the organisers of the JetBlack 12 Hour Race have found a great location at the James Estate Winery in the Upper Hunter, which has a network of great mountain bike trails,” he said.
“The JetBlack track will test riders of all abilities, and the venue will provide great rest and recreation opportunities for their supporters, friends and families who want to stay over and make a weekend of it.”
The $8650 grant was awarded through the NSW Government’s Sport and Recreation Events Program.
“This initiative provides funding for international, national and regional sporting events held in NSW,” Mr Ayres said.
“Events such as these ensure local athletes, officials and volunteers have opportunities to participate in high-level sporting competitions, and encourage local communities to get involved.
“Sporting events also benefit the NSW tourism and sport industries by generating valuable economic spin-offs for local business.”
Upper Hunter MP George Souris said the Jetblack 12 Hour would be a great boost for the local area, and put it on the mountain bikers’ map.
“After an arduous 12 hour ride, many riders and their supporters will want to stay on and rest up, and really enjoy the location,” he said.
“There are facilities for on-site camping and a variety of accommodation options available locally and, of course, the great food and wine that the region is rightly famed for.
“This event already has great support within the mountain bike community with great plans for further growth, bringing more economic opportunities to support local business.”
