That’s the question everyone is asking.
Twelve months ago, all six clubs locked horns in the knockout format but the results had little bearing on the competition proper.
Early pacesetters Aberdeen Tigers and Muswellbrook Rams fell by the wayside, the Singleton Greyhounds and Scone Thoroughbreds surrendered when it counted most, while the Denman Devils eventually lifted the Group 21 title after stunning minor premiers Greta Branxton Colts in the 2013 decider.
In other words, it was a complete form reversal from the pre-season tournament.
Now, a year later, the Tigers, Rams, Greyhounds, Thoroughbreds, Devils and Colts will fight it out again in the Scanlon Shield at Greta Central Oval on Saturday.
All first grade games are contested over two 25-minute halves, with the final to be played – between the top sides – during the 2014 draw.
“It’s tough to predict what will happen this weekend – let alone this season,” Group 21 secretary Jane Walmsley said.
“The committee is hearing Scone and Singleton are down on numbers, however that could change.
“Aberdeen appears to be the dark horse, while we’re expecting Denman, Greta Branxton and Muswellbrook to figure prominently.
“Saturday is our first chance to see all the sides in action.
“The opening round of the season then kicks off on Saturday, March 29.”
Walmsley said Aplus Contracting Hunter Valley Group 21 Rugby League was about to enter an exciting era with the introduction of the women’s league tag in 2014.
“We’re all looking forward to this competition,” she told the Hunter Valley News.
“We have 114 players registered at this stage – all eight clubs, including Merriwa and Murrurundi, are fielding teams.
“A lot of the old stalwarts have been surprised by the skill level, and toughness, of the girls.
“The women’s league tag should enhance the overall product of Group 21.”
