FOURTEEN-year-old Ryan Lade wasn’t entirely happy with how his legspinners came out on debut for St Patrick’s against Lavington at Xavier Oval on Saturday. That was until skipper Heath Naughton had a quiet word in his ear. “He was a bit disappointed with how he bowled but he seemed to cheer up when I pointed out that he took two wickets and neither myself or his old man (Andrew) took any,” Naughton said. “He had a grin on his face after hearing that. “We just wanted Ryan to enjoy the experience and learn a bit and I thought he did well. “He’s a good young cricketer and kid.” Ryan has made 221 runs for St Patrick’s under-14 division one side this season and was promoted for the one-dayer with regular opener Matt Crawshaw on Riverina under-19 duties. Naughton said the Patties were trying to work closer with their younger players. “We have three or four young blokes who are training with us and they are really enjoying it,” he said. “As a senior club we probably need to get closer to the juniors.”
