Steve spent several years roaming the globe before settling back in his native UK, which he uses as a springboard to discover the gems closer to home (especially in continental Europe).

My all-time favourite destination is ... Can I have two? Paris and London, handily linked by the Eurostar, meaning I can breakfast on fresh croissants and pain au chocolat in the French capital and train it to London in time for lunch (a pie and pint in an atmospheric old pub, perhaps).

Next on my bucket list is … Antarctica remains a distant dream for now, so I currently have my eyes on Madeira, the so-called “Island of Eternal Spring”, a lush, mountainous beauty soaring from the Mid-Atlantic, 850 kilometres west of Marrakech as the gull flies.

My top travel tip is … Do consider coming to southern Europe - Italy, Spain, Portugal etc - in the northern winter. Prices are lower, crowds thinner and although the weather is more unpredictable (OK, generally worse), you can still get glorious, mild, sunny days – perfect for those holiday snaps.
