Up to one in five expecting or new mums, and one in 10 dads, are affected by this common, but serious illness.

Despite being common, perinatal anxiety and depression remains little understood and many people still do not know the signs and symptoms or where to seek help. 

The Perinatal Depression & Anxiety (PNDA) Awareness Week: Parents Are People Too (November 12-18) was an important opportunity to raise awareness about perinatal mental health issues in the local community.

It was a time to increase community knowledge about mental health during the perinatal period and eliminate the stigma so that those affected can seek appropriate help and support.

The Upper Hunter is fortunate enough to have an inclusive support ensemble called Upper Hunter Perinatal Depression and Anxiety Support Group. 

This year during PNDA Awareness Week, the group delivered care packages to the local maternity ward for midwifes to give to parents identified as at risk of perinatal depression and anxiety. 

This is our little way to show that we care and there is support available. 

The support group has been running for over three years with local mums the driving force behind it.

One of the mums who helps run the group is Shannon Rhook. 

She is an amazing support to anyone who comes along to the group and will share her lived experience.

Shannon’s story is powerful, raw and honest.

“I didn’t think that I could cope with the demand of being a parent every day,” she said.

“I felt so desperate that I had thought maybe if I gave the baby to someone else to look after, until I felt better, that it would help.”
