Now, Aberdeen is joining the ranks within the Upper Hunter.
Every Thursday, between 4.30pm and 5.30pm, the area’s youngsters can converge on Jefferson Park for a fun, safe, social and active program, primarily for girls and boys aged five to eight.
“It’s the first year we’ve hosted the initiative,” coach Mel Grimshaw said.
“We just wanted to introduce local kids to the sport – cricket is so popular coming into summer.
“Aberdeen boasts a great under-10 side, too.
“And, there’s a good junior base in the area with teams from Muswellbrook, Denman and Scone.
“By taking part in MILO in2CRICKET, children will learn the basics of cricket and develop lots of other skills.
“Plus, from the looks on their faces, they love it.
“They’ll learn how to hit a moving ball; bowl with a straight arm; throw, pass and catch balls; track and trap balls; game sense; teamwork; communication; and sportsmanship.
“The Thursday time slot suits the parents better.
“It also frees up families on the Saturday.
“All equipment is provided and all registered participants will receive a pack containing a cricket bat, soft ball, bucket hat and shirt, water bottle and backpack.”
Cricket NSW manager Neil McDonald said the program was conducted in a safe environment, using plastic equipment, and built its foundations on the essentials for lifelong involvement in physical activity and sport.
“The Hunter [region] boasts more than 40 MILO in2CRICKET centres operated by clubs and associations,” he said.
“This number is growing all the time, such is the interest in the program.
“It also prepares the kids for the MILO T20 Blast.”
