“It was a fantastic weekend – with great attendance,” Mel Atkinson said.
“The Read Write and Spell Facilitators were extremely knowledgeable and very passionate about their work.
“Some of the comments, we received from participants, included ‘I really enjoyed the training. Got so much out of it, which will help when I’m tutoring. Some of the anecdotes were humbling and heartbreaking’; ‘Wonderful experience, looking forward to tutoring someone in the near future’; ‘So good to have presenters who are passionate about their work and want to pass on their talent and experience to others’; and ‘It was practical’.”
Following the training, the group undertook a tour of Muswellbrook Library to familiarise themselves with the tutoring venue and adult literacy resources available.
“They also viewed part of an SBS Insight session, which was very insightful with people sharing real life challenges,” Mrs Atkinson said.
“The next step will be to invite the trained tutor volunteers to an afternoon tea information session.
“This will allow us to move forward with the training, along with seeking adults within the community who would like to improve their literacy.
“Muswellbrook & District Workers Club, through a community grant, paid for the facilitators’ accommodation to support the initiative.
“Read Write and Spell Facilitators Tess, Helen and Pauline provided their services free of charge.
“Our gratitude goes to Muswellbrook Library, Muswellbrook Shire Council and BHP Mt Arthur Coal, who supports the UHCS Community Capacity Building Project, too.
“UHCS would like to thank everyone for sharing their weekend with us to learn such valuable skills that will improve literacy for people in our community and enhance the way in which they experience everyday life.”
