Just after 4pm, police were called to the New England Highway, Wingen, after reports of a crash.
Officers from Hunter Valley Local Area Command attended and found a Hyundai i30 had veered off an overpass and landed on railway lines below.
Emergency services attended; however the driver and sole occupant, a woman believed to be aged in her late 60s, died at the scene.
A brief will be prepared for the Coroner.
