THE Where There’s A Will (WTAW) round is a “pretty big thing”, according to Denman Devils’ Tom Hagan.
“It’s great to see all the BHP Billiton Hunter Valley Group 21 Rugby League clubs supporting the cause but, for me, it’s different – it’s very personal,” he explained.
“I played footy with Will [Carrigan] at the Scone Thoroughbreds for a number of years.
“I had a close relationship with him.
“So, when he took his own life, it was such a shock.
“No-one saw it coming.
“His family, including parents Hilton and Pauline Carrigan, have done a fantastic job in setting up the foundation.
“And, it’s important to raise awareness for WTAW.
“If we can get the message out there that it’s alright to have a chat, when you’re down, then we’ve achieved our goal.”
The Devils’ play-off aspirations took a hit last Saturday night when the side suffered a 44-8 loss to the Muswellbrook Rams.
Denman slipped to fifth spot on the ladder, one point behind the Aberdeen Tigers, and is now relying on other results to go its way.
They must also beat a determined Greta Branxton Colts’ line-up, who’ll be fired up for the special round at home.
“We were simply outplayed [by the Rams],” Hagan said.
“Muswellbrook was good across the paddock.
“But, a few crucial mistakes [at the wrong time] bit us on the bum, too.
“We can’t afford a similar performance against the Colts.
“They’ll be set for a big showdown, especially at Greta on a Sunday afternoon.
“So, we just have to concentrate on our own game – and get the job done.
“Everything else is out of our hands.”
Greta Branxton faces the Merriwa Magpies in reserve grade and women’s league tag, too.
Matches start from 11am.
