The local organisation will celebrate its 50th anniversary on July 8 and 9 – and everyone is invited to join the festivities.
Club secretary Elaine Sparrow said the “golden jubilee” was an important milestone for the Magpies.
“It will be a great weekend,” she admitted.
“It’s a chance for people to meet those who started the Magpies, as well as the men who played the first game for the club.
“Names such as Ken Binks, Des Collings, Bill Cronin, David Hayes, Sam Haynes, Ian Hunt, Chris Jennison, Ray Lumby, Roy Morgan, John Moors, Brendan Simpson, Tony Towler, Brent Walmsley (capt), John Wurcker, Neville Jennings, Tommy Simpson, Darcy Dungey and Graeme Price were part of the 10 years and under side in 1967, while the 12 years and under team featured the likes of Bill Bishop, Terry Deacon, Shane Gleeson, Terry Lovegrove, Paul Lumby, Brett Philipson, Tim Simpson, Steve Trenamin, Philip Wicks and Alan Whitby.
“So, we’re hoping to see a lot of old familiar faces.”
The fun starts at the Merriwa School of Arts, in Bow Street, on Saturday night, July 8, with the 50 Year Reunion Celebration Dinner.
“We’re expecting anywhere between 150 and 200 people,” Sparrow said.
“Not only will we have many members of the first two teams Merriwa entered into Group 21 in 1967, but there’ll also be NRL ambassadors, current Magpies players and local residents.
“The function includes a three-course meal, special guests, launch of our 50 Year History Book, sale of commemorative merchandise, including jackets, mugs, caps and stubby holders, and a segment of On the Couch with Meddy.
“You won’t want to miss this one.”
On Sunday morning, July 9, the club will host a gala day at the Merriwa Sports Oval – for the entire community.
“We’ve planned a recovery breakfast at the junior grounds, to be followed by a 10-a-side league tag competition (5 adults/5 children) playing for the 50 Year golden medallion,” Sparrow said.
“There’ll be jumping castles, fun games, kicking competition, Domino try, water relay, a passing competition and giveaways for the kids, to name a few.
“It should be a great day for all the family and our junior members to enjoy.
“A full canteen will operate with Coffee Van at the ready, too.”
