This activity was part of the Upper Hunter Library’s Summer Reading Program – Heroes and Villain theme.
The Eat a Rainbow program is based around getting children excited about not only eating fruits and vegetables, but also fruits and vegetables of many different colours.
The initiative divides fruits and vegetables up into five colours – red, orange and yellow, green, blue/purple and white.
•Red: helps the heart, memory and helps to prevent some cancer;
• Yellow and Orange: helps the heart, eyesight, healing and helps to prevent some cancers;
• Green: helps prevent some cancers, helps with eye sight and helps to build strong bones and teeth;
• Blue and purple: helps with memory and preventing aging; and
• White: helps the heart and prevents some cancers.
On Wednesday, the children were awarded a super hero award for trying all five Super Hero colours of the rainbow and avoided eating the Villain food of Cheezels, chocolate and lollies.
The program was a success with library coordinator Dion Hockey emailing us positive feedback from the families who attended.
“A huge thank you for today, the feedback we have had has been fantastic and I believe 30 attended even in this weather which is great. From all of us thank you it’s great having you here.”
