Morris Gleitzman has carved a cult following since he wrote his first children’s novel in 1985, with audiences around the world delighting in his moving and humorous style.
His hugely popular books for kids explore serious and sometimes confronting subjects in funny and unexpected ways.
After emigrating to Australia from England in 1969 and working as a bottle-shop shelf-stacker, department store Santa Claus, frozen chicken defroster, fashion-design assistant and sugar-mill employee, he gained a degree in Professional Writing at the Canberra College of Advanced Education and started his writing career as a writer for three award-winning and top-rating seasons with the Australian TV comedy series The Norman Gunston Show.
He also wrote a number of feature film and telemovie screenplays, including The Other Facts of Life and Second Childhood, both produced by The Australian Children’s Television Foundation, and his semi-autobiographical columns appeared in the The Age and Sydney Morning Herald magazine, Good Weekend, for nine years.
But, the majority of Morris’ accolades are for his hugely-popular children’s books, including his latest title, Toad Delight.
Gleitzman will talk about his books and life in writing at Singleton Library on Monday, November 7, from 5.30pm to 7pm.
