The Society is located in the Mechanics Institute building at 74 George Street.
It is a great opportunity to find out about researching your family history and understanding the social context within which our ancestors lived.
The Society has been operating for more than 30 years and holds a wealth of information on not only Singleton, but also the Hunter Valley area.
The list of resources is impressive to say the least and include state, national and international sources.
The commemorative years of WWI have seen the Society’s military collection expand and many have taken the opportunity to learn about their family’s military history.
The Society’s duty librarians assist visitors with their needs and encourage people to research with the view to giving a whole picture of the person.
“It can be quite fascinating how someone’s ancestry develops and where it leads them,” president Lyn MacBain said.
“It is also a pasttime that you can pick up and put down.
“However, most end up with the genealogical disease call ‘gotta find em’.
“It’s a matter of playing detective and finding your own path to discover your history and how it entwines into communities.
“One of the best things we see is the excitement when a person discovers something for the very first time and the joy when someone finds that they ‘fit’ into a bigger family out there.”
The Society also offers membership and research services.
The Family History Society opens Wednesday and Saturday afternoons as well as Monday from 6pm to 8pm.
