“IT’S a terrific way to see a lot of Australia – and support a great cause at the same time” is how Singleton’s Jeff Phillips describes his interest in this year’s S$$tbox Rally.

The owner of Pit Patrol left town on Monday, ready for a 1600km trek to Mackay.
There, Mr Phillips will join other competitors and support crews on Saturday, who’ll then embark on a 3500km journey from Mackay to Hobart.
“I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
“Basically, we’ll be undertaking 500km a day, across some very bad roads in the worst cars (valued $1000 or less) possible.
“I’m expecting a fair bit of carnage.
“There are numerous nasty roads, river crossings; the list is endless.
“The trip will see participants face the challenge of highly variable terrain, changing climates and, of course, crossing the Bass Straight.
“I’ll partake as a support vehicle – taking my tools and towing a car trailer to rescue, or fix, cars as they invariably expire.
“Damaged sumps are a common issue in city cars on bad roads.
“And, I’m one of 10 support crews.”
Surprisingly, Mr Phillips describes the arduous S$$tbox Rally as “fun”.
“It’s great just to be involved,” he said. “I can’t wait.
“Although I could probably do without the 1600km drive to Mackay.
“The challenge, it’s not a race, starts on Saturday and ends a week later.
“Pit Patrol donates me, the vehicle, the fuel and all expenses for the 6000km round trip.
“But, I’m delighted to raise funds for the Cancer Council, too.
“I believe the S$$tbox Rally is the single largest contributor to the organisation.
“This event has already brought in more than $1m for the Cancer Council.
“Many of us have been affected by cancer in one way or another.
“Whether it be parents, family, close friends, people we know or ourselves that have battled or are battling cancer, this all too common and the horrid disease has touched us all.
“We not only want to raise awareness and money for the Cancer Council, but we want to be able to offer support and a friendly ear to those that have suffered or are suffering.”
