Driver Michael Valantine, with son Tim in the navigators’ seat, took out the 2WD Classics victory in the first round of the 2016 AMSAG Series in Oberon.
After straightening out some dents, the Datsun 1600 was good to go.
Or so they thought.
“Once in race mode it quickly became apparent that there was still undetected damage,” Valantine said.
“Bent steering and cracked rails made for very interesting handling.”
It took all of their effort to keep it on the road through the first two stages – in the first break there were a few quick repairs and adjustments, which afforded a slight improvement.
Some emergency welding during the lunch period held through the final stages and the MV Solar team pushed on to take out the 2WD classics category.
The local duo would like to thank support crew, Dennis Valantine, Kara Lewis, Ross, Amy and Amanda Plunkett and Kirk Bendall for their solid performance in keeping them on the road over the weekend.
