Previously the different riding disciplines held their own championships but this year all seven were staged at the one event.
Upper Hunter riders from Zone 7 ( covering an area from Singleton-Cassilis-Murrurundi) were prominent in the winners circle according to their manager Clare Martin from Merriwa.
It was in the campdraft competition where the riders really shone. Merriwa’s Clancy Martin won the championship ribbon 13-under 15 years and Laura Sadler, Murrurundi the reserve ribbon.
Her older sister Lucy won the reserve champion ribbon in the 15-under 17 years class with Lauren Hunt, Merriwa taking out the companionship ribbon in the associate 17-under 26 years class.
Mrs Martin said Queensland competitors also attend the state championship and their was a team event that pitted the best NSW campdrafters against those from Qld.
This event was won by NSW with three of the four riders Clancy Martin, Laura Sadler and Lauren Hunter from Zone 7 in the team.
Clancy was the highest scoring state campdraft competitor for a second year in a row. In 2015 and again this year he was riding his mare Mulwarree Charm.
Merriwa’s Jack Mobberley was the reserve champion under 11 years – in the sporting section.
Other ribbons were achieved in the polocrosse and team sporting competitions.
