And, this month, four gifted members – Kate Lloyd, Bella-Rose Partridge, Malaki Poa and Corey Lowick – will showcase their collective talents at the Region 2 Regional Championships at the Hunter Sports Centre, Glendale.
Over two days, on February 13 and 14, the quartet is scheduled to compete in a variety of disciplines, from sprints to long distance, javelin to discus, triple jump to long jump.
Aberdeen Amateur Athletics Club’s Denise Bell said everyone was delighted by the youngsters’ progress.
“We only have 47 children in the group this season,” she told the Hunter Valley News.
“Of that number, four – Kate, Bella-Rose, Malaki and Corey – went to zone; and all got through.
“So, it means they all placed in the top three of their respective events.
“And, that was a good result for a little club.
“Qualifying for state is the next goal.
“But, no matter how they go at the Regional Championships, they’ve already done the club proud – by just participating at zone.”
Eleven-year-old Partridge will take aim at the under-12 girls’ javelin and is hoping to achieve a PB (personal best).
Poa, 9, has a busy program in the under-9 girls’ division – her preferred event, long jump, as well as discus and 70m.
Thirteen-year-old Lowick is determined to beat his time of 13.37 in the under-14 boys’ 100m.
Lloyd, 15, easily qualified for four different disciplines – the under-15 girls’ 100m, 1500m, 3000m and triple jump.
Although the Rio Olympic Games are out of reach, we might hear more about this “fantastic four” in the years to come.
