Bendemeer is just over two hours north of Muswellbrook and half an hour north of Tamworth.
The Transport Management Centre said motorists are taking it in turns to use the open lane under RMS traffic control following a two-car collision one kilometre north of Bendemeer earlier on Monday.
The diversion via the Oxley Highway and Walcha Road has been lifted.
The TMC said motorists and truck drivers are advised to allow additional time for their journey and to expect delays as emergency services and traffic crews work in the closed lane.
