The warning for possible large hailstones, heavy rainfall and damaging winds was issued on Saturday afternoon for seven weather forecast districts, including parts of the Hunter.
The Bureau issued several updates during a six-hour period while the potential damaging storm cells were travelling across the region.
It said the threat from the thunderstorm activity abated by 7.30pm.
BoM forecaster and meteorologist, Katarina Kovace, said rain was recorded in a number of Hunter locations.
Just over 9mm was measured at Mt Nullo and Bylong; 5mm at Pokolbin; 3.2mm at Merriwa; and 1mm at Cessnock.
If hail, heavy rain and damaging winds are forecast, the State Emergency Service (SES) always advises residents to do the following:
- move their car under cover or away from trees;
- secure loose items around the house, yard and balcony;
- keep clear of fallen power lines;
- unplug computers and appliances;
- avoid using the phone during the storm;
- stay indoors away from windows; and
- keep children and pets indoors.
