The local saleyards redevelopment is expected to modernise the facility’s safety standards, and provide a competitive place for local beef producers.
The project could change the existing selling environment and will include:
- installing a soft floor with rubber;
- constructing a new roof;
- providing adequate lighting within the roof;
- renovating existing amenities;
- installing new walkways and staircases;
- replacing wooden rails with steel rails;
- installing new pens and gates; and
- improving cattle forcing yards.
The redevelopment is a high priority for Singleton Council and will be funded by a $6 million grant under the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions program.
The development application, lodged with Singleton Council in April, is being assessed independently, and the consent authority for the project will be the Joint Regional Planning Panel.
Singleton Council general manager Lindy Hyam said the saleyards are an integral part of the local agricultural sector and part of council’s economic diversification strategy.
“The saleyards are in urgent need of an upgrade and a number of factors have been considered during the planning process, including animal welfare standards, work health and safety, disability access and structural improvements,” she said.
Ms Hyam said improvements to the saleyards will ensure the industry is meeting operational and commercially viable standards across the board.
“With enhanced animal welfare and improved efficiencies, the project will allow us to reposition our regional livestock in the marketplace,” she said.
The development application is on exhibition until Wednesday, September 23, and is available to view at council’s customer service centre, Singleton Library and on council’s website www.singleton.nsw.gov.au
Written submissions can be made to The General Manager, PO Box 314 Singleton NSW 2330 or emailed to ssc@singleton.nsw.gov.au
Construction of the upgrade is expected to commence mid-2016.
