Players were met with torrid conditions as heavy rainfall throughout the day turned the field into a mud pit.
The Thoroughbreds adjusted to the conditions quickly, with forward Timothy Watson diving over under the posts inside 10 minutes.
A double from fullback Tim Smith and further tries to Josh Adams and James Barker saw Scone run out comfortable winners.
Their reserve grade side was also on track for a dominant victory after leading Singleton 16-0.
However, the Greyhounds staged an inspired comeback.
Singleton edged to within two points of Scone with only 10 minutes left on the clock.
Their pressure and desperation paid dividends as a grubber kick into the Thoroughbreds’ in-goal was dived on for the winning try.
A late rally saw Scone repeatedly attack the Greyhounds’ in the dying stages but they could not find a way through.
Tryscorers for Singleton were Brodie Rinkin, Jake Smith, Ethan Coe and Daniel Higgins. Scone’s Ethan Haggarty crossed for a double while Kyle Wilcher also grabbed one.
Despite the setback, the Thoroughbreds’ other two sides, the under-18s and League Tag, both recorded wins.
The 18s beat Greta Branxton 16-6 thanks to tries from centre Lachlan Duwakin, front rower Isaac Austin and substitute Travis Bateman.
The Colts’ only reply came through front rower Te Ata Carroll.
In the League Tag, Muswellbrook could not contain a rampant Scone as the girls ran out 24-4 winners.
Two tries from Maddison Adams and four conversions by Charmaine Bloomfield saw Scone build an unassailable lead.
The Rams fought valiantly, and they were rewarded for their efforts late on as Maddison Swan busted the defence to score the team’s only try.
This weekend’s preliminary finals will see the Colts take on Denman in first grade from 2.15pm at Greta Central Oval.
Scone faces Greta Branxton in reserve grade at 12.40pm, while Muswellbrook clashes with the Colts in both the under-18s and League Tag.
