True Detective's Vince Vaughn is the latest name added to Mel Gibson's next film as director, Hacksaw Ridge.

The film, which will be shot in Australia, already has Brit Andrew 'Spiderman' Garfield and Australian Sam Worthington on board, and is the latest attempt by Gibson to rebuild his reputation in Hollywood after a slew of unsavoury public displays and accusations of racism and anti-Semitism in the past decade.

His last film as director was Apocalypto in 2006, though he has appeared in Expendables 3 most recently.

Vaughn, who made his name in comedies after breaking through in the low budget success Swingers, has latterly been playing straight, most notably in the TV drama True Detective which has been earning mixed reviews for its second season.

In the new series from writer Nic Pizzolatto, Vaughn plays a mid-level criminal with grand plans.

As reported in Deadline Hollywood, in Hacksaw Ridge, based on a true story of a World War II conscientious objector who won the Medal of Honor while serving as a medic, Vaughn plays an Alabama sergeant training fresh troops for battle.

No date has been set for the start of filming on Hacksaw Ridge however it will be filmed at Sydney's Fox Studios and based in NSW.
