Players travelled to Quirindi on July 19 and put in a solid day of rugby.
The Scone under-14s travelled with the largest group all year, with their first game against Quirindi. Quirindi jumped to an early lead with strong play at the very messy breakdown.
“Our boys responded with two very strong tries to Tully O’Regan and Matt Smart,” coach Paul Smart said.
“Tully put his body on the line to smash over after good lead up work from the forwards, particularly Sam Campbell, while Matt Smart scored after the backs created space with some clever hands. Quirindi then took charge of the match.”
In the second game Inverell started strongly, however the Scone boys defended hard. The under-10s took on Barraba in their first match and quickly realised they needed to lift their intensity.
“The team clicked and didn't look back,” coach Angus Patterson said.
“Some strong defensive efforts from Bailey Park saw Scone pinch plenty of ball at the breakdown.
“This gave the likes of Charlie Richardson, Josh Crowther, Heath Pitman and Roly Ward-Thomas space to run.”
The second game against the Moree Bulls was a scrappy game with lots of infringement around the rucks. However, Scone dug in and came away with a solid victory.
The final game against the Quirindi Lions was a great display of running rugby.
“Max Patterson was once again strong in and around the ruck, with Harry Faulkner poised to pounce on the loose ball,” Patterson said.
“The versatility of Angus Beard, Elliot Bull, Cody Grimes, Harry Faulkner and Charlie Richardson allowed the team to try some new and exciting combinations.”
The Scone under-8s took a 26- man squad to the tournament, divided into two teams.
Scone 2 had three games for the carnival against Narrabri, Tamworth and Gunnedah.
“With a long break between carnivals, and very few training session in between, you could easily forgive the boys for a rusty slow start,” coach Tor Killman said.
“This couldn’t have been further from the truth with the boys chanting at the bit to get on the field.
The squad of boys are improving each carnival.” Scone 2 recorded strong wins against their first two opponents in the carnival, and the last game of the day saw them go down to a very determined and well drilled Armidale side.
