Players from the under-12s, 10s and 8s made the long trip up north on May 3 to show the Sapphire City what Scone had to offer.
The under-12s had a tough day with 14 players making the trip, and came away with two loses and a win.
They opened up with a 17-10 loss to Tamworth/Quirindi but bounced back with a 32-0 win over Narrabri.
However, the boys ran out of petrol in the third game and were soundly beaten 29-5 by a strong Armidale side.
“The stand-out players of the day were Lachlan Park and Oscar Metcalf, who worked tirelessly in a forward pack and displayed some strong work over the ball,” coach Rowan Sedgwick said.
“As usual, Ed Arnott was our go to player in the back line in both defence and attack.
“Brody Pittman and Ben King both showed an improved understanding of their new sport with a step-up in involvement. James Caspers also showed lovely hands with some nice touches from full-back.”
In the under-10s, the Faulkner Electrical Scone outfit faced Tamworth, Gunnedah and Armidale.
In the first game against Tamworth, they came away with a 4-3 victory.
“In the end it was our backs that got us home with Heath Pitman, Gussy Beard and Elliott Bull making numerous runs and saving numerous tries,” coach Angus Patterson said.
The match against Gunnedah was a scrappy affair, however Scone dug deep for a 5-3 victory.
The under-10s had to step up in the last game against Armidale, and were rewarded for their efforts with a 4-3 win.
“Our big three of Angus Davidson, Bailey Park and Will Crompton had to step up, and they did exactly that,” Patterson said.
“There were some excellent runs by all of them that put Armidale on the back foot, which helped Josh Crowther, Pitman, Harry Faulkner and Max Patterson to make some good yards.”
Ten die-hard under-8s turned up and faced Moree 1, Armidale and Walcha.
Coach Tor Killman said they never wavered in their enthusiasm, commitment and exceptional sportsmanship.
Killman said while the team went down to Moree 1 in the first game, the boys showed character beyond their years to rally in the second half and put some great phase play together.
“Armidale was a closer affair with some great hard running and last ditch defence, while the last game of the day against Walcha was like watching a great heavyweight boxing match with both teams exchanging blow for blow.
“There was great hard running from Charlton Hall, Andrew Crowther, George Patterson and Flynn Killman.
“Henry Hubbard led the defence with some great cover tackles supported by Laurence Roche and Lindsay Geary, and great all round games had by Archie Adkins, Hamish Davidson and Finn Magner.”
The juniors will now turn their attention to this weekend’s matches.
