Upper Hunter MP George Souris said he was thrilled Resources for Regions funding would support a complete upgrade of Wollar Road between Bylong and Mudgee.
“Upgrading Wollar Road will provide a more accessible and direct link between the Mid-Western and Hunter mining regions for mining-related traffic,” he said.
“It will also bring huge improvements in connectivity between Bylong and Mudgee.
“Since 2011, the NSW Government has committed $217 million to Resources for Regions, including more than $80.1 million in this latest round, to support mining-affected communities experiencing pressures on their infrastructure.
“Projects are chosen for their capacity to help boost economic growth and productivity, ease infrastructure constraints, and support NSW communities affected by mining.”
The Nationals candidate for the state seat of Upper Hunter, Michael Johnsen, admitted the project would improve safety and freight productivity on Wollar Road.
“Thanks to Resources for Regions funding, the mining sector and local community will have a direct and viable alternate transport route to the Hunter region,” he said.
“While Wollar Road provides the shortest and most direct route to the Hunter, road users often avoid the road altogether due to its poor condition and safety risks.
“This project will provide a critical upgrade to 25km of Wollar Road, including the rehabilitation and widening of Wollar Road, a sealed stronger road pavement, wider and safer traffic lanes.
“This funding will also ensure improved storm water drainage, new safety barriers and road signage, full line-marking, removal of roadside vegetation to improve visibility and bridge improvements.”
