Jurien Bay IGA has been fined $2,250 by the Perth Industrial Magistrates Court for illegally employing an underage worker.

An 11 year old girl worked five shifts at the supermarket on weekends in August last year.

Children under the age of 13 cannot be employed under the 2004 Children and Community Services Act.

Those between the ages of 13 and 15 can be employed by the retail industry however only between the hours of 6pm to 10pm.

The employer must also have written permission from parent or guardian for their child to work.

Acting Executive Director of the Labour Relations Division Joseph Lee said the prosecution should serve as a timely reminder to all employers of their obligations under these laws, particularly in the major school holiday period of the year.

“Of particular concern in this matter is the very young age of the child concerned,” Mr Lee said.
