The students used the knowledge they had obtained from the 10-week program to compete in the challenge at Lake Liddell last Wednesday.
Participating students elected to participate in the program during sport hours.
RFS Hunter Valley Fire Mitigation Officer Keith Lobb said this year’s Secondary Student Cadet Program (SSCP) has been the most successful since it began four years ago.
“The students have been very well behaved and keen to learn and have a go at any task the RFS volunteer helpers and I have given them to do,” he said.
For a couple of hours every week the students from both school attended a rural fire service to hone their fire fighting skills.
Safety, communication and basic fire fighting skills form part of the program that is offered to schools with access to a rural fire station.
While there was an element of competition between the students from both schools, last week’s challenge was more about having fun.
“Singleton High won by a narrow margin.
“The judge, group captain Fred Turner, averaged out the scores from all the teams in the three events and came up with that result.”
The program aims to encourage students to join their local brigade and teach them valuable fire safety information.
The SSCP, which targets students in years 9 and 10, finishes this week.
