The Red Cross patron, who has had a few postings in Singleton, was a special guest at Singleton Red Cross Branch’s Centenary Celebration event on Sunday, as was his wife Lady Lynn Cosgrove.
In his address, Sir Peter Cosgrove said the Red Cross symbol was like a beacon of hope.
“We know instantly these are people at the heart of the community,” he said.
“It’s a testament to the desire of ordinary Australians to do their part.
“I was so honoured to be patron.
“You make a difference; if you weren’t here the community wouldn’t be as resilient.
“Lynn and I have vast affection for the community [of Singleton],” he told the crowd.
Sir Cosgrove said he and his wife were glad to be back in Singleton for a visit.
“We feel absolutely at home here,” he told the Hunter Valley News.
The former Singleton resident said he had been enjoying his role as Governor-General.
“It’s been great, it’s been very hectic but you expect the Governor-General to be busy; to meet people and shine a light on good things like Red Cross,” he said.
