Born and raised in Singleton, nineteen-year-old Emma Sheen began her studies at The University of Newcastle this year.

Her study endeavours were aided last week when she was announced winner of a Singleton Mayoral Scholarship in the business category.
The application process involved outlining community involvement and Miss Sheen is encouraging other locals to apply for next year’s program.
“Go for it,” she said.
“It makes you realise what you have actually done in life and it makes you think about what you do in the community.”
While current study may be a main focus for Miss Sheen, she also has her gaze set on future goals.
“I’d like to work in economics and maybe one day in the World Bank or International Monetary Fund,” she told Hunter Valley News.
Miss Sheen would like to thank those who organised the program, and family and friends who have supported her throughout her life.
Scholarship winners
Recipients of the Singleton Mayoral Scholarship were announced last week.
More than 40 students applied across five categories.
Bryden Cox - studying a Bachelor of Veterinary Biology- won the Agriculture category, Bobbie Bayley- studying a Bachelor of Design (Architecture)- won the Engineering and Infrastructure category, Zoe Redmond studying a Bachelor of Nursing- won the Community and Social Services category, Maddison Hough- studying a Bachelor of Natural History Illustration- won the Environment category, and Emma Sheen- studying a Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws (Honours)- won the business category.
Each recipient received $4000 towards their studies.
Applications for next year’s program will open late 2014.
