While a number displayed the form required for a position in the 2014 decider, it was 2013 Australian champion Chris Lowe, who claimed victory.
It was one of those events where the bulls bucked and the inform riders delivered many spectacular rides and just as many equally spectacular attempts.
Queenslander Callum Miller, a relatively newcomer to the PBR Tour, took an early lead in the competition with his 89-point ride aboard Kevin Kasper’s Villan.
NSW favourite Clint Glass demonstrated an enormous amount of effort to make the whistle aboard Lightem Up, which was good enough to earn him second place in the long round with an 88-point score, followed by former Australian champion Lowe, who positioned himself third with an impressive 87.
In total, 11 participants would make qualified rides with the lowest score being an 81.5 and many of the others in the low-to-mid 80s, which in turn would make an exciting final.
The decider began with an awesome match up of seven-time World Finals qualifier Jared Farley and his family-owned bull, Mud Bomb. Mud Bomb gained the victory over Farley.
Next to ride was Todd Litchfield.
After an impressive 83.5 ride aboard Can’t Fool Corey in the long round, he again demonstrated his ability in the major league by delivering an 87-point ride on Dominator and an early lead in the overall competition.
Two bulls later, 2014 Australian Title challenger Justin Paton maintained his good form marking 85.5 points on Little Slinger, giving him a total of 169.5 and second place.
Eddie Carlon would be third rider of the championship round to make a qualified ride with 81.5 points and a total of 167.5.
Uralla’s Lowe faced off against the notorious Navajo, a bull he had previously ridden at the 2013 National Finals.
From the first jump out of the chute, Lowe had great positioning and maintained this control to the buzzer. The crowd thought it was impressive and so did the judges with Lowe scoring the highest-marked ride of the event with a 90.
This gave him a total of 177.5 points and the lead.
It then came down to the final two riders of the event, Glass and Miller.
Glass was the first to be unsuccessful with his attempt on the previously-unridden Sports Machine.
Then it was the young rising star Miller’s turn as he faced off against Cocane.
From the first jump the bull had Miller in trouble, but he did not give in and beared down hard to try and overcome the moves of this big black athletic bull.
It was 5.5 seconds of extreme effort; however the bull would prevail and give Lowe his first win of the new season and a possible position to the 2014 National Finals.
