With national points up for grabs, the best riders in the business will converge on Muswellbrook Showground, according to event organiser Brad Singleton.

So far, he’s received 400 entries for Saturday’s rodeo – a line-up that includes bull riding, saddle and bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, roping and barrel racing, as well as a full junior program.

“This is the last rodeo before the National Finals, which features the top 15 for each event, in January,” Singleton said.

“That means everyone on the circuit is vying to get as many points as possible to secure a spot at Tamworth – and the $30,000 in prizemoney.

“We’ll have riders from throughout NSW, as well as Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia in town.

“This rodeo will boast high-calibre contestants, including national champions past and present – all fighting for a shot at the titles.

“We’re also delighted to showcase a few locals such as Muswellbrook’s Heath Nichols – the Australian steer wrestling and rope and tie champion; and Denman’s Luke Parkinson – the Australian Junior All-Round Cowboy and steer ride titleholder.

“It’s terrific to have talent like that right here in our own backyard.”

Singleton said this year’s charity benefactor would be Muswellbrook Hospital Auxiliary.

“We’ve been raising funds for local organisations for a good couple of decades,” he told the Hunter Valley News.

“It’s our way of doing something for the sport we love and for our community.

“We rely on sponsors and donations, which goes a long way to running the event, so we’re thankful for everyone’s support.

“We’re expecting a few thousand spectators this weekend.

“And, Saturday’s a great day of entertainment – the rodeo starts at 1pm, with the main event from 6pm.

“There is also bar and canteen facilities available, and a DJ after all the action wraps up.

“The cost is $15 (adults), $5 (children and pensioners) and $30 (family).”

Another 700 participants have put their names down for the two-day campdraft on Saturday and Sunday from 7am each day.
